In one paragraph

Run properly, the two halves feed each other. Ad data tells you which phrasings actually produce enquiries, which is the best possible brief for unpaid pages. The Business Profile that carries your map position also carries location-based ad formats. And both are constrained by the same fact: distance decides who sees you.

One: ad data is the best brief for unpaid pages

A month of advertising produces a list of the exact phrases people typed before they enquired. That is not a keyword tool's estimate; it is your own customers. Writing unpaid pages against that list is the difference between guessing what to publish and knowing.

It is also the fastest way to find phrasings no tool reports. Long, specific, low-volume searches rarely show up in demand data and often convert best, and they only appear once you are paying to catch them.

Two: the Business Profile sits under both

The profile that decides your map position also underpins the location-based ad formats Google offers to local businesses. Hours, categories, service area and address have to be right for both, and a business that has done the profile work properly for unpaid search has already done most of the setup for the paid side.

That is the single strongest argument for running both through one supplier: the same asset is being maintained once instead of twice, inconsistently.

Three: the same constraint binds both

Distance. Google states that local ranking rests on relevance, distance and prominence, and location targeting in ads is the paid version of the same limitation. A business in Swords advertising across the whole county pays for clicks from people who will choose someone closer, and the same business ranks poorly unpaid in those areas for the same underlying reason.

Set the radius honestly on both sides. The temptation to widen it is stronger in ads because it produces more traffic immediately, and the traffic is worse.

What ads can do that no unpaid work can

Appear tomorrow, for a search you have never ranked for, in an area you have never been visible in, and stop on Friday. Nothing in unpaid search does any of that. For seasonal trades, new locations and testing a service before committing to it, that is worth paying for even where clicks are dear.

What unpaid work does that ads cannot

Keep working when you stop paying. The click prices make the long-run arithmetic obvious in the expensive trades: the same hundred visits bought every month forever, against earned once.

Where the method lives

The profile, listings and website work is published free, chapter by chapter, on this network's handbook property. Nothing on this page requires an agency to execute, including the parts that would earn one money.
