In one paragraph
They are not alternatives. A paid result is bought and stops the day the card is declined; an unpaid position is earned slowly and decays slowly. The useful question is which comes first, and the click price in your trade largely answers it: where clicks are dear the unpaid case is stronger, where they are cheap ads are a cheap way to learn.
What each actually buys
Ads buy speed, control and data. A campaign can be live this afternoon, you decide exactly which searches you appear for, and within a few weeks you know which phrasings produce enquiries. That last part is the most undervalued: a month of advertising tells you what to write unpaid pages about, with evidence instead of opinion.
Unpaid search buys durability. A position earned over months keeps working when the budget stops, and it does not charge per visit. It is slower, less controllable, and it cannot be switched on for a busy season.
The trades where businesses do best usually run both, using ads to learn and cover gaps and unpaid work to lower the long-run cost of being found.
How the click price decides the order
Expensive clicks make the unpaid case stronger. A roofer paying about thirteen dollars a click is paying about thirteen hundred dollars for a hundred visits, every month, forever. The same hundred visits earned unpaid cost the work once. That does not mean skip ads; it means the unpaid work is unusually valuable and should start immediately alongside.
Cheap clicks make ads a good first move. At thirty to sixty cents a click, a few hundred dollars buys thousands of visits and a real picture of demand, quickly and at low risk. Learn there before spending months on pages.
The middle is where most Dublin trades sit. Between about one and three dollars, both routes are affordable and the decision comes down to how long you can wait for enquiries.
Three cases where one clearly wins
A new business with no site authority and a phone that needs to ring: ads, now. Unpaid search cannot help in the timeframe.
A business with strong local presence already ranking in the map: unpaid work first, because the cheapest visits available are the ones already nearly earned. Ads for gaps and seasons.
A trade with almost no search volume: neither. Painter and decorator dublin draws about twenty searches a month, and no amount of budget or optimisation creates demand that is not there. That page covers it.
The honest bias to declare
This desk is published by a company that sells both services, so it has an interest in the answer being both. The check on that is the arithmetic: the click prices and the budget table are published in full so a reader can reach a different conclusion from the same figures.
